Old Stomping Grounds

It was back to Seattle University for a couple of portrait sessions as part of an update to the Albers Placement Center’s website. Nine students, two weeks, and one under-utilized bachelors degree later…

My thanks to Megan Spaulding at the APC for throwing a guy a bone and to everyone who contributed to the shoot. My portfolio is now that much less sucky.

Inside The Killing: The Look

Check out this video feature and learn how Director of Photography Peter Wunstorf sets the tone for AMC’s new series The Killing, which just completed its first season. Nothing says murder and depression quite like Seattle.

Look. Boats.

Boats, bridges, and Fremont shit. Enjoy.

Simple Apothecary

Peak a few images from my latest shoot with Simple Apothecary, located in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Joe Langholt creates hand-crafted skin products while Emily Waddell turns out sweet, sweet hair-do’s from the full-service salon.

Seattle Nights Revisited

Deciding to shoot alone at night, in an unknown part of the city, without telling anybody, was not the smartest thing I’ve ever done. I don’t recommend it to anyone, even if you are one of those self-assured types. Things can and do happen to people who take dumb risks. Suffice it to say that I had an unpleasant encounter with someone who didn’t appreciate my uninvited company.

That said, night photography is a nice departure from your typical shooting experience. It’s a slow, methodical process that forces you to change your perception of exposure. As your shutter speed lengthens, photography starts to become something else entirely, outside of our snap-shot mentality. The scene in front of your lens isn’t so much captured as it is painted onto the camera sensor. Light takes on a new personality and yields interesting and often unexpected results. Shadows don’t appear where you anticipate them to be and sometimes disappear entirely. Objects in motion melt away as static elements burn their way into your camera’s memory. The resultant empty spaces in these images are, in essence, vacated by time.

No White After Bumbershoot

April 13, 2011 Leave a comment

Apparently, Bumbershoot is an old English colloquialism for umbrella. Quite appropriate, since it’s also the name of Seattle’s annual end-of-summer arts and music festival. Thousands of visitors gather in the heart of the Emerald City for one last hurrah before the arrival of the winter season and 6 months of unrelenting gloom.
